Artist Statement and Résumé
I have been studying and doing art since I was a
child growing up in Oklahoma. When I was 8 years old, one of my
pictures was chosen for a cultural exchange exhibit with the USSR.
I graduated from Southern Methodist University and taught for
many years at Durham Academy. I have lived in Chapel Hill for
almost 30 years.
In addition to studying with local teachers, I have
taken workshops at Arrowmont School of the Arts, at Springmaid
Beach Watercolor Workshop, at Instituto Allende, San Miguel de
Allende, Mexico, on a painting retreat in Barberino Val d’Elsa,
Italy, and with the Institute for Art and Living.
I paint primarily in watercolor but recently have
been exploring acrylics and mixed media. I am interested in using
color to express the essence of my subject, rather that trying
to make my pictures look completely realistic. I like to push
color—if I see a rock with a bluish tinge, I will paint
it really blue. The intense color expresses the emotional involvement
I feel with my subject. My paintings are colorful celebrations
of the natural world.
